Yeah the only way to get an invite (even if you're an avid indie music fan who has the finest collection of albums that aren't even on what.cd) is to either know someone or to wait in the what.cd IRC for a shitload of time and then get interviewed by these "elitists."

Some instructions from a scene forum - how to get a What.cd invitation:

DO NOT GET WHAT.CD INVITES FROM INVITE SITES (getinvites.org and others) AND/OR INVITE FORUMS! YOU WILL GET BANNED ABOUT 99.8% OF THE TIME! WHAT.CD HAS A WAY TO FIND YOU, EVEN IF YOU USE A DIFFERENT USERNAME, OR SOME SCHEME LIKE THAT! PLEASE DO NOT RUIN YOUR ONLY CHANCE OF GETTING INTO WHAT.CD! HAVE ENOUGH RESPECT TO GET IN LEGITIMATELY!



1. Getting an invite:
Potential users should never ever look for invites from a third party, namely invite sites. ONLY get invites from members of what.cd or from passing the interview. While this may not stop what happened recently to fellow members, it may prevent you from experiencing the joy of getting in only to be banned almost immediately.

2. The interview:
To join What.CD you have to keep a good upload/download ratio or you will get banned pretty quickly. So only try to join What.CD if you are serious about keeping a good upload/download ratio and just not going to join just to download as much as possible and not upload anything.

To join follow these steps:
First you need to download an IRC client if you haven’t already got one. I recommend mIRC an easy to use free IRC client, which is downloadable here www.mirc.com.

When installed and ready to go. You need to join the What.CD IRC server which is irc.what-network.net Port 6667 or 6697 (with SSL). Once you have connected you got to join the channel #what.cd-invites. DO NOT GO TO ANOTHER CHANNEL AND ASK FOR AN INVITE, YOU WILL BE BANNED FROM THE CHANNEL OR IGNORED.

When in the channel read the instructions that are given. Type !queue into the channel and you will be added to the waiting list to be interviewed for an invite. Please be patient waiting in the queue can take up to 4 hours or even longer. This is where you got to be one of them people that really want an invite as you could get an invited to the interview at anytime so you really need to stay at your computer watching to screen.

When you get invited to an interview room you will be asked a few question about yourself, how much you know about music e.g. do you know what a FLAC file is? And you might need to provide and image of your upload/download ratio of other private Bittorrent sites. So before you go to an interview room be sure to have a speedtest.net result ready.

Don’t be nervous when answering the questions.

If they accept you and are willing to give you an invite they will ask for your email address and then they will send you an invite. So just go to you inbox and you will see an invite. From there on it is easy street as you just got to sign up and you’re in.

Please be aware that they might not give you an invite for many reasons. So don’t be too disappointed if you don’t get an invite. You can try again, but the interviewers might get tired of you if you show no signs of improvement.

Good luck. And remember to keep up a good upload/download ratio.

What.cd is my favorite torrent site. It's better than waffles.fm for a few reasons, one being the artist tagging and the ability to connect one artist with other similar artists. All the people blabbing about being elitist obviously aren't members, and really have no room to say much. It looks like they have all been turned down for invites, or been treated badly by someone who happened to be a what.cd member. There hasn't been much that I can't find on what.cd, the uploads are all high quality and all properly labeled. Best, by far over anything public, and certainly better than waffles.fm in many ways.
@the dizz: No one downloads tracks anymore, you need full albums with log files (preferably) that are cleanly tagged. Basically, you're not allowed to upload music that's been scrounged off the net, you need to have ripped it yourself, or have the file info to prove it's not a transcode.

Well, I didn't prejudge the members of what.cd, when I tried to join. I can understand the interview process, as well as the benefits of a private tracker. I have a 2:1 (UL:DL) ratio on other torrent sites, I seed frequently, I obey the rules, I respect the moderators, and I'm listening to music only in lossless quality. But as I tried to join the interview IRC channel, I had to face the fact, that my entire country was banned, because of other retards being disrespective, and willing to get something from a community, without giving anything back. I just can not accept, that they disallow a member, who would have a positive effect on the community, with such a sweeping generalisation like this.

If you're asking for an invite on a forum, you're not going to get one. A member risks getting banned if a person he invites winds up being a jackoff . . . it's not worth it at all.

The community is give and take. You need to earn the benefits that are provided by the community. You do this by uploading. The screening process is merely to ensure that people will give back to the community.

The great thing about a tracker that takes a bit of effort to join is the fact that it keeps lazy, ignorant, short attention span people out. what.cd has many rules and that helps keep the quality of files high. Without rules it would just be another napster. I care about music quality and what.cd does too.

I joined What.cd nearly 2 years ago via their IRC interview process. I now spend more time on this site than ANY other site. The wealth of music, the quality of files, the webcode, the forums, the community, it's all there.

This site, is what it is, thanks in part to the number of man hours put in by it's users. And since I'm one of those users, let me start by saying: If you're too stupid or lazy to read a faq or put in the time or the effort, then good riddance. But if you give just a little effort, then you'll never have to beg for another torrent invite ever again. And i mean that. They will literally open pandoras box for you.

If you care enough to jump through the interview hoops, you'll be accepted into the site, which probably means you care enough to give back to the community and keeping a good ratio. If you don't care, you would probably just download stuff and delete it from your torrent client to make room for more downloads, damaging the experience for the rest of us that care. They are not elitist, they just want to keep out your typical hit and run pirate bay newbies who otherwise know nothing about audio. Believe me, I thought they would be somewhat elitist but they're really not. Sure, you have some music snobs but that comes with the territory naturally. I would make a great addition to the What.CD community, but because of time constraints on my busy life, I feel as though I just wouldn't have the time to dedicate to my uploads like I used to.
Yes, I consider myself an audiophile, I know more than I should about sound quality, I work for a music distributor, I get my hands on music WAY before release date, I receive masters from the labels so we can have them manufactured, and my T1 lines at home and work have fantastic up/down speeds.
All that to say, I wish I had the time to dedicate to a great site like What.CD - I wholeheartedly endorse their methods of choosing who gets in and who doesn't. I have read the FAQ and it seems a fairly simple process outside of killing hours waiting for the interview to take place.

Kudos to What.CD for having some integrity and making sure that only quality rips from quality people make it into the hands of those in the know.

If anyone decides they want to wave the time-wasing interview, feel free to email me.

I heard about the tracker about 1 year ago but didn't want to get into all the hassel for geting the fucking invite, I thought: fuck em! too much shit to get into a torrent site! what a bunch of wankers!

I joined a pair of months ago cause someone gave me an invite and if I knew before what the site was about, I would go before to the IRC and suck their cocks to get in.

The place is a fucking music library with all kind of music from all ages, there are records there that you can't get anywhere, anymore and almost all of them are in FLAC.

On the downside, that tracker is the hardest ever when it comes to keep a good ratio. They have many stupid rules in order to keep the torrents seeded but they miss that users with seedboxes are screwing the others by taking all the upload bandwith and don't allowing users with a common upload speed seed properly. The first rule they should to impose there is to ban seedboxes.

Do they are a bunch of wankers? Yes, totally. The tracker is built on stupid rules, fascist norms and elitist shit. Is like they think you don't have anything else to do in life than stay at What CD, they want you to LIVE there, to dedicate your internet connection exclusively to their tracker, like if there's not anymore places in the net.

Does the place it's worth? Yes, absolutely. As I said before, you can find almost any CD made there, since it's so hard to keep a good ratio, users upload whatever they have making the place the biggest discotheque ever.

Now run to the fucking IRC and lick their asses till they let you in, if you really love music, you won't regret it.

What.CD is GREAT! You guys don't know what youre missing. The staff there is great too, and the community even better. It's a privilege to be a member there, and its not open to the public simply because What is comprised of dedicated seeders whose passion it is to give back. (and we want to make sure our invitees are as well) If you have to have FLAC or V0 then What is THE destination for everything quality. Currently the home of 377,000 albums 178,000 of which are perfect 100% log/cue FLAC's. If you can't find it on What, your chances of finding it at all are slim. STUDY your music and an EAC (Exact Audio Copy) guide and TAKE the test on irc! It's not that difficult, especially if you already have a passion for quality digital music. WELL worth it, and the best part... its FREE! Find your way onto What A.S.A.P.!!!!

And it's really not hard to keep a ratio there; you're probably used to public trackers where you can seed things for a few days, or worse, hit and run. Seedboxes are tough to compete with, but it's possible, and that's what makes what have high speeds on the vast majority of torrents.

I am in What.cd.

It is notoriously hard to upload there. Everything has been added already. It must be limited edition, something nobody knows about it, or very obscure for it to be not on the site. If it is anywhere near popular forget it. And there are just too many seeds. A couple months after I joined they revised the upload rules so you don't really need to maintain a ratio if you are seeding all the time. It's really more complicated than that but helps. It doesn't change the fact that I'm too afraid to download anything. So I use it as a last resort and for extremely rare things. The rest of the time I use it to tell if something has been released at all, and then start looking in other places for it in the coming days. One annoying thing though is that tags are lacking. No ReplayGain, album art, embedded logfile/AccurateRip IDs, advanced IDing such as MusicBrainz or Discogs. Since I will be seeding this stuff basically till I die and it's a HQ music site, part of the rules should be high quality tags too. At the moment all they really require are track number/artist/album, really the bare minimum.

How did I get in? Luck. I got invite out the blue and I didn't even ask for one. I was talking about what.cd to somebody I was downloading from, and they just happened to be at a big user on the site and offered me an invite! That is all it took! I actually do know some about ripping and technical parts of music a bit too. Being nice, relatable, and intelligent in general pays off. Especially to strangers. Anybody can "turn on" when they want something, it's about how you really act where there's no prize on the line. This is true of life in general though. I find the concept of having to leave my torrent client on 24/7 ridiculous, but stuff from what and private trackers in general are leaked so there users in other places than torrents. Finding or running into them may be the key.

If India or China are still blocked though, that is a real shame. The interview process sounds really annoying and that only complicated the matter. I will see if anything is about that on the forums. At the moment though, the site and tracker are down.

I wouldn't wait around for invites. Sites don't release them much. I recommend if you actually want in that you do something and take the interview. It can be a pain but it is worth it when your in and I would be so confused if I hadn't taken it. I have learned a lot from it and you use that knowledge every log in. But seriously you will NOT get in waiting for invites.

The only problem i have with this tracker is not that you have to put up with an interview, that they're elitist fucks etc. Its this: THEY BANNED MY ENTIRE FUCKIN COUNTRY to which there is no remedy. Using Tor, VPN, or some other proxy up your sleeve wont work either cause they have a way of figuring that out. Keeping the leeching losers may be a good idea but otherwise banning a population of 70 000 000 is nowhere near reasonable. How can 1 person be kept responsible for the rest? This reminds me of school when the teacher punished everybody for the 1 anonymous person committing out of the line stuff.

In fact, I have a few cds (some i've ripped and put on PirateBay) and a huge digital music collection, and plan on buying more rare cds and records and ripping them in lossless quality, but don't know much about building websites, etc. I would be very interested in communicating with anyone who's good at programming and knows about torrent protocol, trackers, etc. and starting a semi-private music tracker site with all kinds of music, but esp. hard-to-find music.

I will respond to them however, by pointing out that the reason people think of you as elitist asshats has to do with the folks who came after you to do nothing but promptly place their heads in their asses and remark about how lovely and fresh it is there whilst the outside world inhabited by smelly douchebags who know nothing about anything simply because they don't mind lower-quality audio.
